چکیده

[1] A constraint on the rheology of oceanic mantle is derived on the basis of a recently established scaling law for the onset of convection with temperature-dependent viscosity. Our approach is free from the assumption of statistically steady-state convection, which has commonly been employed in previous studies. The estimated range of asthenospheric viscosity is 1–4 10 Pa s if the activation energy is 300 kJ mol , and 4 10– 10 Pa s if the activation energy is 100 kJ mol . The former range is consistent with laboratory data as well as geodynamic inference based on the geoid. The latter is consistent with geodynamic inference based on seamount loading history. Different activation energies predict different temperature contrasts in convecting mantle. Seismic tomography has the potential to discriminate between these possibilities.

Numerical models of convection in a rheologically stratified oceanic upper mantle: Early results

Recent seismological evidences imply that the boundary between the lithosphere and asthenosphere is a compositional boundary in the oceanic upper mantle, and a rapid increase of viscosity at this boundary is suggested. We modeled a thermal convection in the oceanic mantle numerically using the finite element method, and investigated geodynamical consequences of such a rheological layering. Earl...

Influence of the earthquake cycle and lithospheric rheology on the dynamics of the Eastern California shear zone

The Eastern California Shear Zone is bounded by the high heat flow region of the Basin and Range province and the low heat flow region of the Sierra Nevada block. This difference in thermal state influences the rheology of the lower crust/upper mantle, resulting in a viscosity contrast between the two regions. We analyze the effect of such a contrast on the kinematics and dynamics of the shear ...

An Experimental Investigation into the Effects of High Viscosity and Foamy Oil Rheology on a Centrifugal Pump Performance

This paper presents the effect of high viscosity oil and two-phase foamy-oil flow on the performance of a single stage centrifugal pump. As a part of this, the applicability of a pipe viscometer to determine the foamy oil viscosity is investigated. Unlike previous studies, a sealed fluid tank is used in a closed flow loop to allow conditioning the two-phase mixture to create foamy-oil. Furtherm...

Effects of Slip Condition on the Characteristic of Flow in Ice Melting Process

In this paper a laminar flow of water on an ice layer subjected to a slip condition is considered numerically. The paper describes a parametric mathematical model to simulate the coupled heat and mass transfer events occurring in moving boundary problems associated with a quasi steady state steady flow process. The discretization technique of the elliptic governing differential equations of mas...
